How it works

Get a compatible export

Follow the instructions for the source. If it downloads an archive, extract it and select a JSON file accepted by the adapter.

Choose what Fostera derives

Ask Fostera to extract selected user context, persona signals, or both. You can also paste conversation text instead of uploading a file.

Review, then import

Check the detected source and preview before approval. Fostera creates the approved Soul fields and memories; it does not recreate the source transcript as Fostera chat messages.

In ChatGPT, open Settings → Data Controls → Export Data. Unzip the download and select conversations.json.

Claude

In Claude on web or desktop, open Settings → Privacy → Export Data, extract the archive, and select conversations.json.

Gemini

Use Google Takeout for My Activity → Gemini Apps and select MyActivity.json, or export a prompt from Google AI Studio as JSON.

Grok

Character.ai

Nomi has no official export. Select JSON created by the compatible Nomi downloader extension.

Replika

Replika has no official bulk export. Select JSON from a compatible chat-export extension or bookmarklet.

What Fostera can derive from the source

Selected user context

Extract preferences, goals, interests, and relevant facts that the source text supports. Review the preview before approving what is stored.

Persona signals

Derive voice, traits, and relationship-style signals when the history contains enough evidence. This is a generated approximation, not a transfer of the original AI identity.

Combine selected user context with persona signals. You choose the intent before processing and review the result before it is applied to a Soul.

How import data is handled

The raw file you upload is not retained. A bounded, normalized draft may be staged for about 24 hours so the import can finish or be resumed. It is cleared when processing finishes or fails. If abandoned, it becomes unavailable when it expires and is removed by the next successful scheduled cleanup.Only the resulting Soul fields, extracted memories, and a content-free receipt remain. During preparation and extraction, selected content may be processed by one of Fostera's available third-party AI providers. Provider handling varies by the requested feature, routing, service tier, settings, and provider terms described in the privacy policy.

How to import ChatGPT conversations into Fostera

In ChatGPT, open Settings → Data Controls → Export Data. Unzip the download and select conversations.json.

Custom instructions are only available when supplied alongside conversations.json.

How to import Claude conversations into Fostera

In Claude on web or desktop, open Settings → Privacy → Export Data, extract the archive, and select conversations.json.

Non-text tool and thinking blocks are not imported as messages.

How to import Gemini conversations into Fostera

Google Takeout frequently omits Gemini response text from MyActivity.json.
HTML response backfill and Takeout ZIP extraction happen outside this adapter.

How to import Grok conversations into Fostera

In Grok, open Settings → Data Controls and download your data. Extract the archive and select the JSON file containing your Grok conversations.

The xAI archive must be extracted before import.
xAI can change the downloaded archive layout, so newly exported shapes may need an adapter update.
Grok consumer-chat conversations only; Grok Bot state and Grok Companions identities do not migrate.

In Character.ai, open Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Export data. Extract the download and select the JSON file containing your conversations.

Nomi has no official export. Select JSON created by the compatible Nomi downloader extension.

Community export support is best effort.
Group-room messages are grouped by room when room identifiers are present.
User-profile extraction depends on what the conversation history reveals about the user.

How to import Replika conversations into Fostera

Replika has no official bulk export. Select JSON from a compatible chat-export extension or bookmarklet.

Diary and Replika-memory sidecars are intentionally excluded from conversation import.
History availability depends on what the source account and community exporter can retrieve.
Relative timestamps in legacy bookmarklet exports cannot be reconstructed reliably and are omitted.
User-profile extraction depends on what the conversation history reveals about the user.
