Why Fostera exists

A model call does not carry personal state on its own. Products such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Grok now add memory, history, projects, instructions, or connected sources around the model. The remaining problem is practical: what was saved, which scope it belongs to, and why a later response did or did not retrieve it.

Fostera was built around inspectable memory and project context. You can review, edit, and delete extracted memories, while retrieval remains selective and can still miss or misapply a detail. The 9-tier progression makes familiarity and capability access visible through Stranger, Familiar, and Trusted phases. It does not train or upgrade the underlying model.

About the founder

Nathan Foster is the founder of Fostera. Senior engineer with years of experience shipping consumer products at scale — full-stack TypeScript, React, and AI-adjacent infrastructure. He built Fostera after repeatedly having to reconstruct project context, preferences, and decisions when work moved across conversations.

The architecture decisions in Fostera — episodic + semantic + procedural memory layers, the 9-tier progression UX, multi-model routing, the enforced age-gating with guardian consent for teens — reflect lessons from using and shipping AI products. Fostera uses Auto mode to choose from plan-eligible engines. Premium members can manually select an eligible engine when they want that control.

What Fostera is not

Fostera is not a therapist, therapy app, or substitute for licensed mental-health care. We do not diagnose, treat, or claim therapeutic outcomes. Users in crisis should contact 988 (US) or their local emergency services.

Fostera does not serve children under 13. Under-13 signups are rejected at the door. Teens aged 13–17 can only use Fostera with confirmed parent or guardian consent, and their accounts run with stricter, enforced content rules than adult accounts.

Fostera is not a substitute for human relationships. AI companions can supplement connection; they cannot replace it. We design with that boundary in mind.
