Why long-running AI roleplay can drift

The model itself does not preserve personal state between calls. A roleplay product has to rebuild the next turn from some combination of the open thread, character instructions, pinned facts, project files, summaries, and retrieved memories. Many current products offer at least some of these layers, but none makes every old detail equally available forever.

As a campaign grows, character voice, world rules, NPC histories, and unresolved plot threads compete for limited active context. A fact may be stored yet not retrieved for the turn where it matters, or a later improvisation may conflict with the source of truth.

A larger context window helps, but capacity is not the same as durable storage or reliable retrieval. Long-running roleplay works best when hard canon has an explicit home and generated memories can be inspected and corrected.

What persistent, editable context can do

Character instructions and approved examples can keep vocabulary, cadence, and emotional register available to the model. Project files can hold a story bible, while Custom Rules can state the facts or constraints that should be supplied consistently.

Soul memory adds a different layer: selected events, facts, preferences, and relationships can carry across chats. Because those memories are visible and editable, you can correct a mistaken detail instead of hoping a hidden summary repairs itself.

These layers reduce the work of restating context and give a campaign a better continuity foundation. They do not guarantee that the model will cite every relevant fact, catch every contradiction, or stay perfectly in character on every turn.

How to use Custom Rules for canon

Fostera's Custom Rules feature lets you encode canonical facts and behavior instructions that are supplied consistently to the Soul. Put non-negotiable world rules here rather than relying on an ordinary chat mention to be retrieved later.

Useful Custom Rules for roleplay: "The kingdom uses silver drahms (1 drahm = 100 strals)." "NPC Ivah was exiled, not escaped. She lies about it." "Magic requires verbal components for spells level 3+." "Character voice: dry, formal, uses archaic phrasing."

Treat rules as high-priority context, not deterministic code. Models can still make mistakes. Keep a compact source of truth, review generated memory, and correct drift when it appears.

Why we're SFW — and how age-gating works

Fostera enforces its age policy at signup. Date of birth is required, under-13 signups are rejected, and 13–17 accounts stay locked until a parent or guardian confirms consent by email — with stricter, enforced content rules on teen accounts.

How to set up roleplay in Fostera

Pick a Soul preset. Creative Partner fits fiction; Dungeon Master fits TTRPGs; Companion or Connection can fit character-driven slice-of-life. Presets provide a starting configuration that you can revise.

Add Custom Rules for hard canon such as geography, magic, currency, and character voice. Keep longer reference material in project files, and state which source wins when two facts conflict.

Build context deliberately. Establish the cast, setting, current scene, and unresolved threads, then test a new chat with a few facts that should be retrieved. Do not use a fixed session count as proof that memory is reliable.

Use the memory controls to inspect what the Soul has stored. Edit stale details, pin important facts, and delete incorrect or unwanted memories. Stored information can still fail to retrieve, so keep essential canon in explicit rules or source files too.
