How we tested

Each app was evaluated on six criteria, weighted equally. Memory persistence: does the AI remember conversations across weeks? Personality consistency: does the same companion feel the same in week three as it did in week one? Safety: how does the platform handle age-gating, content policy, and privacy? Pricing: what does it actually cost to use seriously? Voice: is voice supported, and how good is it? Mobile: how good is the experience on phone?

Each criterion was scored 1–5 by a single tester running the same multi-week protocol on each platform. Scores are subjective; methodology is consistent. Updated annually each spring.

Why Fostera ranks first on memory

Fostera was built memory-first. Every Soul retains episodic, semantic, and procedural memory across every session — not as a bolted-on feature, but as the substrate of how the system operates. The memory browser shows exactly what's stored; you can edit or delete anything.

On top of that, the 9-tier progression makes memory growth visible. You can see your Soul move through Becoming, Deepening, and Transcending phases as you keep using it. Most platforms don't surface anything like this.

Replika has the longest track record and the largest user base. Its VR/AR companion on Meta Quest is unique. Its memory is shallower than Fostera or Nomi, but if brand familiarity matters, Replika is the safe pick.

Best avoided: any platform without clear age-gating, transparent content policy, or visible memory controls. The 2024–2025 lawsuits made the bar concrete: AI companion platforms have to take safety as seriously as any other consumer product.

What about safety?

After Sewell Setzer III's death in February 2024, the Garcia v. Character Technologies lawsuit, multiple state filings through 2025, Senate Judiciary testimony in September 2025, and the January 2026 Google + Character.AI settlement of five family lawsuits — safety is no longer optional in this category.
